The Intersection of Creativity + Innovation

The  Art + Technology Initiative was formed in 2008 in an effort to unite and cultivate the creative and innovation communities, in our community and beyond. By exploring the various intersections of business and art, and creating unprecedented strategic partnerships, the initiative aims to enhance the productivity of both groups, while fostering this nexus to spur cultural and economic progression. Founded on the idea that art and technology share the fundamental characteristic of innovation, as well as a synergy at the forefront of societal evolution, the Initiative and its partners are dedicated to unearthing the possibilities of this leading-edge fusion.

The Art + Technology Initiative Story

The Design, Art and Technology Awards (DATA) and the 15 Minutes Gallery
The Art + Tech Initiative kicked off with a bang in 2008 with the first-ever Design, Art + Technology Awards at the 15 Minutes Gallery — the initiative’s innovation art space. Nearly breaking fire code, and featuring over 75 artists and technologists, the awards and gallery became the foundational element of the Initiative. This pioneering event has attracted world-class partners and speakers, including: Pop Artist, Burton Morris;  Cirque du Soleil; Will Wright, creator of The Sims video game series;  J Moses, founder of WeChi Social Media and former President of BMG Interactive and MTV Russia; and, most recently, Chip Walter, CNN Bureau Chief and Author of Last Ape Standing.

The Pittsburgh Entertainment Technology Project
From 2010-2012, due to a flourishing Hollywood presence in Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Technology Council partnered with Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center, the  Pittsburgh Film Office, and Idea Foundry as a resource for adding innovation to the Hollywood pipeline.

The Creative Technology Network (CTN)
In 2012, the PTC launched partnered with the Carnegie Museum of Art to host the Creative Clash!, the launch of the first-ever Creative Technology Network — consisting of a dedicated program of events, educational workshops, visibility initiatives and business development/investment opportunities for companies, artists and organizations working at the intersection of creativity and technology.

SXSW: Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh has a regular presence at Austin’s SXSW Interactive festival each spring. In 2013, Carnegie Mellon University and the Pittsburgh Technology Council partnered to create Innovation City, an official SXSW event that featured a night of night of futuristic tech, innovative robotics, cutting-edge startups and ubergeek DJs. With a line around the block, it was quite a party!
